North Stonington is a town in New London County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 4,991 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 55.0 square miles (142.4 km²), of which, 54.3 square miles (140.7 km²) of it's land and 0.7 square miles (1.7 km²) of it (1.20%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,991 people, 1,833 households, and 1,424 families residing in the town. The population density was 91.9 people per square mile (35.5/km²). There were 2,052 housing units at an average density of 37.8/sq mi (14.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 94.31% White, 0.60% African American, 2.06% Native American, 1.06% Asian, 0.22% from other races, and 1.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.44% of the population.
   There were 1,833 households out of which 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.7% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% were non-families. 16.3% of all households were made up of individuals and] 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.03.
   In the town the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.2 males.
   The median income for a household in the town was $57,887, and the median income for a family was $61,733. Males had a median income of $45,625 versus $29,133 for females. The per capita income for the town was $25,815. About 3.3% of families and 4.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.1% of those under age 18 and 1.5% of those age 65 or over.
   North Stonington has the most stone walls in Connecticut.

Media Attention

As of 2006, North Stonington's own Keith Sidle (an ambitious 17-year-old) had his own segment on the MTV show, MADE. Keith's goal was to go from buff bodybuilder and rockclimber to a ballroom dancer. With help from Keith's MADE coach, Marcus, Keith went from bodybuilder to ballroom dancer in just 6 weeks. The episode aired November 6, at 10 PM.
